Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father had left, the Ford family was managed by her mother, grandmother and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on words as a young toddler. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth attempt, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She already made a TV appearance in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
